Latvia and Ukraine sign memorandum of understanding on cybersecurity

RIGA - Latvia and Ukraine have signed a memorandum of understanding on cybersecurity, which will create a legal framework for cooperation and ensure the use of technical and human resources in this area, LETA was told a the Defense the Ministry.

The memorandum is intended to facilitate the exchange of information between Latvia and Ukraine on various cyberthreats, as well as the establishment of bilateral communication channels aimed at improving the reporting of cyber incidents and the exchange of experience and positive examples.

The memorandum also foresees cooperation in education, research, development and innovation, organization of joint public events, as well as other activities as mutually agreed, the Defense Ministry informed. 

The memorandum was signed in Kyiv by Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds (Progressives) and Jurii Myronenko, Head of the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine.

Spruds indicated that cooperation between Latvia and Ukraine in the field of cybersecurity is particularly important, as the wartime expertise provided by Ukraine will allow Latvia to implement more thoroughly prepared solutions to strengthen resilience and increase preparedness both in peacetime and in emergencies.

The Latvian minister noted that Russian cyberattacks target Western countries' information and communication technology infrastructure in an attempt to disrupt essential services.
