TALLINN – The Environmental Board has capped the number of bears to be hunted in Estonia this year at 94, and by Aug. 6, 32 bears had been shot, Postimees reported.

The brown bear hunting season in Estonia started on Aug. 1, and in just five days, seven bears had been hunted in Järva County and West-Viru County each, five bears in East-Viru County and Tartu County, three bears in Harju County, two bears in Pärnu County and Rapla County, and one bear in Viljandi County, the Estonian Hunters' Society said.

Bear numbers and the areas populated by bears have been on a general upward trend for at least the last 15 years, and the status of the bear population in Estonia can be considered very good, the organization said.

The bear hunting season runs from Aug. 1 to Oct. 31.
