RIGA - President Andris Berzins urges Latvian citizens to act responsibly during Saturday's language referendum, so that Latvian remains the sole official language of the country.

“I urge all Latvian citizens to act responsibly in regard to their decision in Saturday's referendum. Latvia's future is in your hands, and one must act responsibly so that Latvian remains the sole official language,” Berzins told the press on Feb. 15 after a meeting with Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity).

The referendum on granting the status of state language to Russian will take place on Feb. 18.

771,893 votes will be required to designate Russian the second official language in Latvia.
