Reinis Dzudzilo's Contemporary Art Exhibition

  • 2024-08-15

For the final exhibition of their 2024 summer cycle “Breaking Down Structures of Affection,” TUR presents the exhibition “ONE WILL HEART ONE” by artist and scenographer Reinis Dzudzilo. The exhibition opening is at 18:00 on Wednesday August 21st in TUR, space for contemporary art, on Tallinas ielas Kvartāls, and runs till September 21st.

In "ONE WILL HEART ONE," Dzudzilo uses the considerable space at TUR to convey themes of movement, connection, and potential, exploring where art and architecture merge into a dialogue between the familiar and the new. Through an interplay of time, space, and creative expression, Dzudzilo utilizes the sphere as a symbol of aesthetic beauty and playfulness. The sphere, symmetrically perfect, yearns to be set in motion, transforming space itself into a gate or goal through which a ball can be kicked—a metaphorical gateway to possibility.

Inspired by Umberto Eco's History of Beauty, Dzudzilo challenges the traditional permanence of beauty by replacing it with the lightness and dynamism of a ball. He consistently seeks to liberate space, creating emptiness where “pauses” exist. His interventions within these pauses become aesthetic entities that invite the visitor to step inside and experience a sense of time stretching out like an endless horizon. The spaciousness and symmetry of TUR encourage reflection and motion, allowing visitors to lose themselves within its bounds and discover new meanings.

Dzudzilo extends his playfulness to other aspects of the exhibition, most notably with the title, “ONE WILL HEART ONE,” which remains solely in English and untranslated into Latvian. Dzudzilo explains, “HEART should be read as a verb between the ONE, but the meaning can be open and interpreted by the visitor as they choose. To my ears, ‘heart’ and ‘hurt’ are close, something you can't achieve between the Latvian sirds (heart) and sāpināt (to hurt).” This play on language, exploring phonetic similarities and differences between words like "hurt" and "heart," invites reflection on how meaning is constructed and perceived. “ONE WILL HEART ONE” encourages visitors to engage with the artwork openly and interpret it through their personal lenses.

About TUR

TUR's ambition is to complement Riga's contemporary art scene by working closely with their selected artists to create high quality, curated art exhibitions. Collaborating with the distinctive characteristic of the space - which refers to both the traditional white cube and the building's industrial past - artists are invited to create new work and encouraged to experiment beyond what might be their conventional practice. Since it was founded TUR has organized contemporary art exhibitions as well as concerts, performances, and poetry readings related to the exhibitions. Several of TUR's exhibitions have been nominated for the Purvītis Prize with Luīze Rukšāne's “Folding Lines” receiving the honor in the previous quarter. Last year “Voices in My Heads” by Rūdolfs Štamers and “Lapa uz lapas” by Maija Kurševa were nominated.
