Stiga RM invests more than EUR 7 million in the green transformation of production

Implementation of a major energy efficiency and emissions reduction project at the birch plywood mill of Stiga RM in Kuldīga, which includes a more than EUR 7 million investment by the company, is coming to an end. The project involves the construction of heat treatment pools to improve the heat treatment process of birch plywood, the construction of a boiler house and the installation of a new steam boiler, thus ensuring the lowest possible energy consumption and reducing the environmental impact in line with the requirements of EU Climate Policy.

More energy-efficient heat treatment pools

Within the framework of successful green transformation activities, the construction of new pools for the hydro-thermal treatment of birch plywood will be completed at the factory grounds as soon as in December. Unlike the pools used previously, they will increase the efficiency of the treatment process while reducing the overall energy consumption by up to 2 MW. Furthermore, the new solution will help to almost completely eliminate the odour inherent in wood soaking, thus having a positive impact on the well-being of the workers and the residents around the plant.

Sustainable steam power to ensure production

The construction of a boiler house is close to completion. It will house the world’s most innovative steam boiler, which will meet all future environmental requirements. It has a total capacity of 12 MW, producing up to 20 tonnes of steam per hour and providing significantly higher efficiency. The new boiler will be fired with low-value wood – wood chips, wood residues and by-products from the production process of plywood, thus contributing to sustainable waste-free consumption and the use of CO2 neutral energy in the industry.
