RIGA - Roberts Zile (National Alliance) was re-elected European Parliament vice president on Tuesday, his spokesman Karlis Bumeisters told LETA.

Zile is so far the only MEP from the Baltics elected to this post.

Zile stresses that he is pleased and grateful for the renewed confidence of the MEPs and, therefore, for the evaluation of the work done in the past.

"Serving in this position has allowed me to use my political influence on the issues that are most important to Latvia and to defend them more effectively than a single ordinary MEP's vote would allow. The position of vice president allows me to have a broader range of people with whom I want to work, as well as those who want to work with me, thus expanding the political traction and influence that is beneficial for Latvia and the Baltics, whose interests I always try to defend," said Zile.

As reported, Roberta Metsola, representing the conservative European People's Party (EPP), was elected President of the European Parliament for another term on Tuesday by a very convincing majority.

562 of the 720 MEPs present at the first sitting of the new EP term voted in favor of Metsola.
