RIGA - As many as 18,600 Ukrainian citizens have lost their temporary protection status in Latvia without renewal of residence permits, the Office for Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) informed LETA.
The register of natural persons includes 30,920 Ukrainian residents with temporary protection in Latvia.
PMLP has changed the information in the Register of Natural Persons on 18,600 Ukrainian citizens who have lost their temporary protection status in Latvia because they did not apply for a new temporary residence permit within a month after the expiry of their visa or residence permit.
This number includes both persons whose visas or residence permits expired in the first quarter of 2025 and persons whose documents expired in 2022.
Their place of residence is not known to the PMLP, but the administration assumed that some of these people have left Latvia. The administration notes that when the temporary protection status expires, Ukrainians do not have to account for whether and where they are going.
If a Ukrainian resident who has lost temporary protection status continues to reside in Latvia, he or she must submit an application for renewal of the temporary protection status and for a residence permit.
"It is important for those Ukrainian civilians who continue to reside in Latvia to submit the documents, as the residence permit is linked to the possibility of receiving both benefits and other services," said Maira Roze, the head of PMLP.
