'To pick a flower, you must bend down' – Imants Ziedonis

On May 3rd and 4th, Latvian plant growers will gather at the Festival Square in Sigulda for the annual "Plant Parade", proudly showcasing their finest cultivations and sharing insights on how to create your dream garden.

This year, the event organizers invite everyone not only to focus on the practical side of gardening but also to reflect and philosophize on what it truly means to be in nature— to sink your fingers into cool soil, to rejoice at the sight of a fresh sprout emerging from the earth, and to celebrate amidst a richly blooming garden.

Among many plant growers, visitors will also be greeted by the Ziedonis Museum, offering engaging activities for both children and adults, all centered around the beauty of green Latvia. Even Ziedonis’ dog Funs will be visiting!

Andrejs Svilāns, head of the Dendrology Department at the National Botanical Garden of Latvia and an expert for the Plant Parade, shares that Latvians are a nature-chosen people. Despite shops being flooded with flowers meant to be thrown away shortly after purchase, our reverence for nature and living plants remains strong.

“This respect for life compels us to care for every tree, shrub, and flower—even those that may seem to have lost their battle. A flower is a miracle of nature. Even when cut and dying, it continues to bring hope into the joyful and sorrowful moments of our lives. As Imants Ziedonis once wrote, ‘To pick a flower, you must bend down.’ Not only to reach it—but also, symbolically, to bow in gratitude before this miracle gifted to us,” he says.

“Imants Ziedonis called for blooming in countless poems, epiphanies, and essays. Not only the blooming of plants—but of people, too—through thought and action,” says Jānis Holšteins-Upmanis, head of the Ziedonis Museum. “As we open the new season of the Ziedonis Museum, we invite everyone to bloom, to plant, and later to rejoice in the colorful results.”

As every year, for two days in Sigulda’s Festival Square, only plants grown in Latvia will be available for purchase. Local artisans and home producers will also be there to invite visitors to explore their creations, while food vendors will ensure that no one goes hungry. Stands hosted by non-governmental organizations will offer engaging activities for all ages.

And once again, each day around midday, we’ll hold a charity plant auction to support those who cannot ask for help themselves—our four-legged friends living in shelters and under the care of nonprofit organizations.

3. un 4. maijā Siguldas Svētku laukumā kopā sanāks Latvijas stādu audzētāji, lai “Stādu parādē” dižotos ar izaudzēto un dalītos pieredzē, kā veidot savu sapņu dārzu. 

Pasākuma organizētāji šogad aicinās visus padomāt ne tikai par praktiskām lietām, bet arī pafilozofēt, ko katram no mums nozīmē būt dabā, iegremdēt vēsā augsnē pirkstus, priecāties par tikko no zemes izlīdušu asnu, svinēt svētkus bagātīgi ziedošā dārzā. Starp daudzajiem stādu audzētājiem apmeklētājus šogad uzrunās “Ziedoņa muzejs”. Lieliem un maziem būs sarūpētas interesantas aktivitātes par mūsu zaļo Latviju. Ciemosies arī Ziedoņa suns Funs. 

Arī Latvijas Nacionālā botāniskā dārza Dendrofloras nodaļas vadītājs, “Stādu parādes” eksperts Andrejs Svilāns, gaidot maija pasākumu, saka, ka esam dabas izredzēta tauta, kam pietāte pret dabu, dzīvu augu vai ziedu nav zudusi, kaut veikalu plaukti nu arī pie mums ir pārpildīti ar drīzai izmešanai paredzētām puķēm. “Šī cieņa pret dzīvību mums liek justies atbildīgiem par ik koku, krūmu un puķi pat tad, kad, šķiet, tā pati jau ir zaudējusi savu cīņu. Zieds ir dabas brīnums. Pat nogriezts un mirstošs, tas turpina padarīt cerības pilnākus mūsu dzīves prieka un bēdu mirkļus. Kā raksta Imants Ziedonis, “lai puķi noplūktu, ir jāpieliecas”. Ne tikai, lai to aizsniegtu, bet arī tādēļ, lai kaut simboliski pateicībā paklanītos šī mums dāvātā brīnuma priekšā”. 

“Imants Ziedonis uz ziedēšanu aicinājis neskaitāmos dzejoļos, epifānijās un publicistikā. Bet ne tikai floras pasauli - viņš rosinājis ziedēt arī cilvēkus - caur savām domām un darbiem. Atklājot "Ziedoņa muzeja" jauno sezonu, ziedēt, stādīt stādus un pēc tam priecāties par krāsaino rezultātu aicinām arī mēs - muzeja komanda”, saka Ziedoņa muzeja vadītājs Jānis Holšteins – Upmanis.

Kā katru gadu Siguldas svētku laukumā divas dienas būs iespēja iegādāties tikai Latvijā audzētus stādus. Pircējus aicinās arī amatnieki un mājražotāji. Mūsu ēdinātāji būs gatavi pabarot ikvienu izsalkušo. Nevalstisko organizāciju stendos visus gaidīs interesantas aktivitātes. 

Arī šogad, katras dienas vidū, organizēsim augu labdarības izsoli, atbalstot tos, kuri paši nevar palūgt palīdzību – mūsu četrkājainos draugus, kuri mīt patversmēs un biedrībās.
