According to a recent survey by Latvian research company, SKDS, slightly over one third of Latvian residents believe that the country should re-introduce the death penalty.

The survey took place in January 2016, with 36,6 of recipients calling for the re-instatement of the death penalty.

Meanwhile, 47.3 percent had an opposite opinion on this matter and believe that the death penalty should not be re-introduced in Latvia.

16.1 percent of those surveyed did not have a point of view.

The death penalty was abolished in Latvia in 1991, when it gained independence from the Soviet Union.
