RIGA - So far, 20 applicants have applied for training at the State Border Guard College, Minister of Interior Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) said in an interview on Latvian Television this morning.

He explained that the admission process is ongoing and it is worrying that at this time last year 200 applications had already been received, but this year the number is 20.

"This, in my opinion, sends a very clear message that we need to think seriously ahead how to motivate young, potential border guards to come to the service," the minister stressed.

He reminded that the Government has made internal security a priority. Kozlovskis is confident that the situation will improve next year.

"The aim is to go in the direction of leveling the salaries with that of the National Armed Forces," the minister pointed out.
