Kultūros Dienos 2024: Marijampolė to Become the Epicenter of Classical Music

  • 2024-08-30

In September 2024, Marijampolė and the surrounding region will once again become a hub of classical music and culture. The international classical music festival, now in its fourth season, will transform from the "Culture Week" into a month-long celebration called "Kultūros Dienos" (Culture Days).

The "Kultūros Dienos" festival will take place from September 6 to 20, 2024, in various locations across Marijampolė and its region. The exceptional program is designed not only for music lovers but also for those discovering classical music and seeking innovative cultural experiences. This vibrant festival promises a true cultural breakthrough.

The "Kultūros Dienos" program will feature eight unique events, showcasing internationally acclaimed performers from the USA, Moldova, Poland, and the United Kingdom. As always, the festival organizers are dedicated to curating a repertoire that will pleasantly surprise the audience. Stunning, never-before-seen musical installations, unique concert contexts, and an expanded educational program for Suduva's youth and educators are the festival's core elements.

Special attention is given to artists from the Lithuanian diaspora who return to create in their homeland. Marijampolė Philharmonic Director and Artistic Director of the Festival, Marius Reklaitis, highly values their return: "The initiative of diaspora artists to create for their homeland is not only a significant cultural event but also a vital bridge that connects our past, present, and future. These talented creators, who have gained invaluable experience abroad, bring new ideas, perspectives, and energy to Lithuania. Marijampolė becomes the epicenter where connections with our roots are revived, international experience meets local traditions, and new creative horizons emerge."

The Marijampolė Philharmonic takes pride in its most cherished creation – the Suduva Youth Symphony Orchestra (SJSO). Now in its third year, this orchestra, composed of the next generation of young artists from Suduva, will once again enjoy the creative space designed to nurture their potential. Artistic Director of the Philharmonic and Festival, Kamilė Zaveckaitė, shares her joy: "We founded this orchestra with a firm belief that such an initiative would reignite young people's passion for classical music and motivate them to choose the classical arts. We aimed to improve the declining study rates of performance arts in Suduva through rehearsals and concert workshops. To our surprise, within just a few years, the realization of this goal exceeded our expectations! The SJSO project has become the most anticipated event for music students in Suduva. It is a living testament that the performing arts are an experience that words cannot describe."

This year, the "Kultūros Dienos" festival invites audiences to a series of unique events:

“Is This Reality? Or Is It Just Fantasy?” – September 6, 18.30, at the St. Michael the Archangel Basilica in Marijampolė. The opening concert will feature the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, the Česlovas Sasnauskas Chamber Choir, and pianists Kamilė Zaveckaitė and Alexander Paley (Moldova), conducted by Marius Reklaitis, offering an unforgettable evening of philosophical musical reflections. The repertoire of the Fantasy genre alone will captivate and leave audiences questioning whether they are still in reality or have entered a magical dimension of fantasy.

“The Furniture” – September 10, 19.00, at Marijampolė Culture Center. A two-part experiential concert and installation for piano and furniture with incredible sound and light effects integrated into a "furniture" – piano installation. The concert, interconnected with live streaming and sound sculpture, explores the dual nature of the piano, both as a physical object and an artistic idea.

“The Beauty of Lithuania to the Rhythm of Guitars” – September 11, 19.00. The Baltic Guitar Quartet, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024, will present a diverse program of Lithuanian and international composers at Paežeriai Manor, a prominent cultural heritage site in Vilkaviškis District.

“Symphonic Ballet for Eight Hands” – September 13, 19.00. In this exceptional piano quartet performance, four virtuosos from the chamber ensemble “Inseparable Pianists” – Lukas Gedvilas, Lauryna Lankutytė, Gabija Maknavičiūtė, and Kamilė Zaveckaitė – will showcase their artistry at Marijampolė Evangelical Lutheran Church.

“Hotel Tango” – September 15, 18.00. A performance by Trio Agora, offering an international journey through the history and evolution of tango, from Paris salons to Buenos Aires streets, and beyond. The concert will take place at the Beatričė Kleizaitė-Vasaris Art Gallery.

“Pause, Dreamy Thought!” – September 17, 19.00. This sound meditation concert, led by the Piano Phase Project duo, blends classical music with improvisation, relaxation meditations, Tibetan bowls, and readings from musicians K. Warner, V. Wooten, and M.K. Čiurlionis.

GALA Concert – September 20, 19.00. The grand festival closing at Marijampolė Culture Center will feature the Suduva Youth Symphony Orchestra with pianist Kamilė Zaveckaitė and conductor Marius Reklaitis, celebrating the musical talent of the region's youth.

The traveling photo exhibition “A Light-Infused Glimpse into the Classics” by Dainius Čėpla will be displayed at each festival concert and later at the “Spindulys” cinema in Marijampolė. The collection captures moments from previous festivals, transcending traditional photography and offering a unique "audible" visual experience.

The "Kultūros Dienos" festival aims to promote professional performance arts and foster international cultural collaboration. We invite everyone to join this extraordinary celebration of culture!

The festival is funded by the Lithuanian Culture Council and Marijampolė Municipality.
