VILNIUS – Former president Valdas Adamkus is holding a comfortable lead in the upcoming presidential race, while the upstart Labor Party is set to garner the most votes in European Parliament elections, according to a poll released on the Delfi Internet news service Wednesday afternoon.
The survey, conducted by the Spinter Tyrimai polling agency, revealed that 26.5 percent of respondents would vote for Adamkus in the first round of elections if they were held now.
The next closest candidate for the nation's top political job was Social Security and Labor Minister Vilija Blinkeviciute, the nominee from the New Union-Social Liberal party. Blinkeviciute gained the support of 14.4 percent of respondents.
The poll further disclosed the Labor party as the frontrunners in the election that will select Lithuania's 13 MEPs. The party, which was founded by Russian-born pickle magnate Viktor Uspaskich last autumn, gathered support from 18.5 percent of those questioned.
Runners up were the ruling Social Democratic party, with 14.2 percent, with the Farmers' and New Democracy party coming in third at 6.9 percent.Elections for president and European Parliament will be held concurrently on June 13.
