Diphtheria epidemic plagues Latvia

RIGA - A disease that ravaged Eastern Europe more than 50 years ago has caused 80 deaths in Latvia since 1993, seven this year.Diphtheria, a bacterial infection that is passed from person to person through close physical and breathing contact, has been contracted by more than 900 people during that period of time.
