The Lithuanian soccer team lost 2:1 (0:0) to Scotland on Sept. 6 during the 2008 European Championship qualifying round. The match was held in Kaunas. Scotland's Christian Dailly and Kenny Miller scored the team's two winning goals, while Darius Miceika scored the only goal for Lithuania. Lithuania will next play the Faroe Islands in an away match on Oct. 7.
After Lithuania was defeated 2:1 in the European Championship 2008 qualifiers, about 500 Scottish fans stayed in Kaunas to celebrate the victory. The majority of soccer visitors, however, travelled the 100 kilometers to Vilnius to party. There were no reports of violence or hooliganism, neither in Vilnius or Kaunas. Overall, about 4,000 kilted Scottish fans accompanied their team to Lithuania for the game.
Swiss tennis star Roger Federer promised there would be more Grand Slam success to come after beating Andy Roddick 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1 in the U.S. Open final. The victory represented Federer's third straight U.S. Open title and the ninth Grand Slam of his career, putting him sixth on the all-time winners list. Federer is ranked number one in the world. "It's nice but I don't want to stop here," the 25-year-old said. "It's been a fantastic season... unbelievable."
