RIGA -- Prominent Latvian politician Andris Berzins has been officially nominated to take part in the upcoming presidential race.
Berzins was nominated by a number of individual deputies from the Greens and Farmers Union after the party decided that its deputies would have a free hand to vote as they want in the election.
Latvia's presidential election is scheduled for June 2, when the country's parliament will conduct a secret ballot to determine the next head of state. The only two candidates at this time are Berzins and incumbent Valdis Zatlers, either of whom would need a simple majority of 51 votes to win.
