Assets of Latvian commercial banks - not including those under management - have grown 4.6 percent over the first four months of this year, reaching 4.6 billion lats (6.9 million euros) at the end of April, reported Latvia's Commercial Banking Association.

Latvia's largest bank in terms of assets remains Parex Bank, with 957.8 million lats, up 1.3 percent since the end of 2002, giving it a 20.7 percent share in total banking assets.

Second-place Unibanka is in threat of losing its position to rival Hansabanka, as both posted equal market shares of 15.7 percent each in late April.

Latvijas Unibanka posted assets of 727.4 million lats, up 1.4 percent, while Hansabanka posted assets of 724 million lats, up 7.3 percent since the end of last year.

The country's three largest banks together hold a 52.1 percent share of Latvia's banking assets.

In the first four months of 2003 seven of Latvia's 23 banks reported a drop in assets, with Latvijas Biznesa Banka falling the most by 22.7 percent to 15.5 million lats.

The largest gainer in assets over the period was Baltikums Bank, whose assets were up 73 percent to 31.4 million lats.
