Latvian real estate developer RENOBERG Estate has launched the large-scale renovation of the historic residential quarter “STEFAN’S HOUSES”, consisting of six buildings located at the corner of Brīvības and Tallinas Streets in central Riga. This project marks a new chapter for Brīvības Street, one of the city’s key arteries, which is regaining attention as an attractive and vibrant part of the urban landscape. Over the next three years, the quarter will undergo transformation that combines modern functionality and refined aesthetics, while preserving its cultural and architectural significance. The total investment in the project amounts to €5.1 million.

Located at Brīvības Street 128 and Tallinas Street 26, the six-building complex will retain its authentic architectural features while being fully adapted to meet the needs of modern urban living. The development envisions 67 thoughtfully designed apartments, combining contemporary layouts with original historical details and architectural charm. The total renovation area comprises 3,132 square metres. The scope of work includes façade restoration, modernization of engineering systems, courtyard landscaping, construction of parking spaces, and the installation of façade lighting to enhance the buildings’ visibility and character during evening and night hours.

According to Rita Maizenberga, co-owner of RENOBERG Estate:
“The revitalization of this quarter is more than just a renovation – it is a chance to redefine what it means to live in Riga’s historic centre. Brīvības Street is one of the city’s most iconic locations, and we are proud to contribute to its renewal and future growth. By restoring this architectural ensemble, we are not only preserving Riga’s heritage, but also helping shape a new level of quality in the urban environment. We believe this project will serve as a strong example and a positive impulse for Brīvības Street and beyond.”

Apartment Layout and Location

The “STEFAN’S HOUSES” project will feature 67 compact apartments, including both studio and one-bedroom layouts. Each unit is designed with a strong focus on functionality, ensuring that every square metre is used efficiently. In addition to the residential units, plans include 17 parking spaces, landscaped communal areas, and dedicated storage rooms in the basement level. According to the developer, this project is well-suited for urban dwellers seeking comfort, as well as for those looking for a smart investment opportunity, whether for rental income or long-term capital growth.

The quarter is situated in a pedestrian-friendly and high-traffic area, enhancing the potential of future commercial spaces. The location offers easy access to essential city infrastructure, including kindergartens, grocery stores, public transport, and healthcare facilities. The New St. Gertrude Church is located directly opposite the property, and Riga’s historic Old Town is only a few minutes’ walk away. Within a 15-minute radius are Skanste – a hub for international businesses and modern residential developments – and the VEF district, a rapidly growing centre for innovation, entrepreneurship, and cultural activity.

A Historic Legacy

The building complex dates back to 1887, when the first residential and commercial building was constructed, designed by Otto Dietze, a German-born architect. In 1902, another building was added, designed by Konstantīns Pēkšēns, one of Latvia’s most influential architects. Known for his elegant balance of classical aesthetics and functionality, Pēkšēns is the author of more than 250 buildings in Riga, including the main building of the University of Latvia.

Over the years, the buildings have served a variety of public and commercial functions. In the 1920s and 1930s, the site was home to calligraphy courses led by educator Kārlis Kristbergs, as well as a private kindergarten and preschool founded by his wife, Otīlija Kristberga-Melne. Other uses included a guesthouse operated by E. Lapiņš and several retail outlets, such as the “Kārlis Bērziņš” department store and Anton Naglovskis’ lamp and glassware shop.
