RIGA - Using the new regulation that came into effect at the beginning of this week, six couples registered their partnerships already on the first day, LETA learned.

Three same-sex couples and three heterosexual couples registered their partnerships on July 1.

As reported, the package of draft legislation, proposed by Justice Minister Libina-Egnere (New Unity) to introduce a new legal institution of partnership, passed the final reading in the Saeima on November 9, 2023. The amended law provides the possibility for two adults, of different or the same sex, who are in a personal relationship, live in a single household and are not bound by restrictions on the conclusion of a partnership, to register their relationship with a notary.

The first couple to register their partnership in the early hours of July 1 were two men, Janis and Maksims. After registering their partnership with a notary public, the couple went on a walk in the city center "to celebrate this historic occasion". They have received congratulations from representatives of the Dzivesbiedri (Spouses) movement and Justice Minister Libina-Egnere.

In a post to X social networking service, President Edgars Rinkevics also congratulates all those for whom the introduction of the partnership status is important.
