RIGA - A strong sanctions policy restrains the aggressor Russia and strengthens our security and that of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Baiba Braze (New Unity) said at a meeting of the Sanctions Coordination Council.
The Foreign Ministry told LETA that the minister said Latvia would continue its strict sanctions policy against Russia and stressed that now was not the time to talk about easing sanctions.
The sanctions are working, despite Russia's attempts to deny it, as evidenced by the fact that in all negotiations with the US, Russia is seeking the lifting of sanctions, Braze said.
The Foreign Minister said that on February 24 this year, the European Union adopted its 16th sanctions package, which includes a number of new sectoral restrictions as well as sanctions against individuals. Particular attention is paid to curbing the activities of the Russian "shadow fleet". At the same time, the minister informed that work was underway to prepare a new 17th sanctions package against Russia. The sanctions will also continue to be imposed in close coordination with the US and the UK.
Braze invited the members of the Sanctions Coordination Council to continue their constructive cooperation, both by proposing new sanctions and by explaining to the business sector that cooperation with Russia is not possible.
