The Estonian Defence Forces have received another six CAESAR self-propelled howitzers, which will be put into use by the artillery regiment operating under the Estonian division. The first six weapon systems arrived in Estonia at the beginning of the year, and the training of the first battery took place using conscripts. The second artillery battery was manned with reservists in July of this year during a training assembly held for this purpose.

The CAESAR self-propelled howitzer (from the French Camion Equipé d’un Système d’Artillerie) MK1 is a 155mm caliber indirect fire weapon, which allows units to rapidly reposition even over long distances and engage targets more than 40 kilometers away. The standard caliber enables the system to use a variety of NATO-standard munitions. Its level of automation, combined with sufficient simplicity, allows gun crews to be trained within a few weeks. Its widespread use in various countries ensures long-term logistical support and spare parts availability.

The Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI) signed contracts in the summer of 2024 with the French defence procurement agency DGA and the defence industry company KNDS for the procurement of 12 wheeled CAESAR self-propelled howitzers. The contract includes an option for additional purchases in the future.

In February of this year, the first conscripts of the division's artillery battalion began learning to operate the new weapon systems as part of the battery subunit course, with the first live-fire exercises taking place in March using national fire support system Tooru.
