RIGA - This is a time when Europe must be united, said Saeima Speaker Daiga Mierina (Greens/Farmers), welcoming Hungarian Ambassador to Latvia Gyorgy Urkuti to the parliament on Tuesday.
As LETA was informed at the parliament, the parties discussed the current geopolitical situation, including the latest developments in relation to US tariffs. The Saeima speaker stressed that the US is our partner both in defense and trade. In her view, dialogue is the most effective way to reach common ground.
"We are a part of a single European market and we need to look at this from the perspective of the European Union (EU)," said Mierina.
Referring to bilateral relations between Latvia and Hungary, the ambassador confirmed that Hungary is a reliable NATO ally of Latvia. Urkuti also underlined the similar history of the two countries and the challenges we face, including in the social and economic spheres. The two parties agreed on the possibility of strengthening cooperation in the field of new technologies, including through Latvia's newly established Artificial Intelligence Center.
The Saeima speaker thanked Hungary for the invitation to visit Budapest, where the Conference of Speakers of EU Parliaments will be held in May.
