Today, three new barracks were opened at Ämari Air Base. In addition to accommodation for conscripts, the buildings also provide workspaces for active-duty personnel, as well as utility and storage rooms. The barracks, with a total area of approximately 15,000 square meters, also increase accommodation capacity for allied forces.
Ämari Air Base has seen significant development over the past two years. “In November 2024, we reopened the Ämari Airbase´s runway, and in December of the same year, new maintenance and training garages for the routine upkeep of military equipment and training purposes were completed. The barracks opened today will significantly improve the living and training conditions for our conscripts, active-duty personnel, and allies,” said Steven Linkov, Western Portfolio Manager at the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI).
The new barracks have been designed primarily to meet the training needs of the division, Estonian Navy and the Air Force. “The air base headquarters has been operating in temporary facilities for almost a year, but now we can move into our workspaces in the newly completed, specially designed barracks. Additionally, it is extremely important for the air base that the accommodation capacity for allies improves and increases significantly, especially considering the upcoming Siil25 exercise this year,” said Acting Commander of Ämari Air Base, Major Pille Joala.
Jaan Mäe, Chairman of the Management Board of Merko Ehitus Eesti, the company that built the barracks, stated that the completed work involved much more than just constructing buildings. “Ensuring comfortable living and learning conditions for active-duty personnel, allies, and conscripts requires high-performance infrastructure and technical systems. Alongside the construction of the barracks, various technical systems were also developed. We are very grateful to ECDI and the units at Ämari Air Base, with whom we were able to carry out large-scale and highly diverse projects within a short timeframe,” Mäe acknowledged.
In November 2023, ECDI signed design and construction contracts with Merko Ehitus Eesti AS and Ehitus5ECO OÜ to expand the infrastructure at Ämari Garrison, improving accommodation and training opportunities for conscripts, active-duty personnel, and allied forces. The procurement was divided into two parts: the first involved the construction of Ämari barracks and expansion of utility networks, while the second focused on building the maintenance and training garages at Ämari.
